What song best describes your current mood?
Submitted by Section31.
My current mood: Equally Damaged by Blonde Redhead, off Melody of Certain Damaged Lemons.
Back in Seattle. Exhausted. Napa was good. Wedding was good. Too much driving. Not enough drinking. Bay Area traffic is as bad as Seattle traffic. Zipcar is an interesting service, though imperfect. The Handlery Hotel in SF Union Square is frankly a bit amateurish. The Meritage Resort in Napa is nice; it's unfortunate that its spa will not open until February. I found two really great items, jackets, at the SF H&M before I left: a blonde corduroy sport jacket and a desaturated mauve canvas peacoat. A pair of rare gems. I missed my apartment, which I was surprised to find clean—I forgot that I'd tidied up before I left. A box of books from Amazon arrived while I was away: a stack of dieting and weight loss books, which my parents ordered for me, after learning of my recent weight gain. I'm a little flattered, though insulted. Mai thinks I should focus on illustration, which sounds like a smart idea.
I'm in San Francisco. Just returned from dinner with Davide, Haiyan, and Dana at Medicine Eatstation, a fantastic, smart vegan Japanese restaurant in downtown SF. Davide thought it was strange that I'd not met Dana and Haiyan in real life before (I know them from online). But I think it's becoming more common in general, and for me and my life, it's quite normal.
Also: I applied for a ZipCar membership earlier this week, and picked up my card today. I'm bummed that most of the Mini's were booked during the times I needed a car (I'm driving to Napa in the morning). Still, I think it could be nice to drive a car that isn't mine for once. Wouldn't it be funny if you replaced the word car in this paragraph with the word girl?
I'm off to bed.
What magazines do you subscribe to, and why?
- The Believer. Because Amy Sedaris writes an advice column called Sedaritives for the magazine. She is reliably hilarious. When she actually writes the column, that is; a rotating cast of unworthy guest columnists have sat in for her the past several months.
- Theme. Because it is gorgeously designed and well-written. And it's the pet project of my ex-Pentagram friend Jiae and her husband John.
- Dwell. Because my best friend is all about green building.
- Metropolis. For the same reasons I subscribe to Dwell.
What was the first movie you remember seeing in a movie theater?
Question submitted by mainmor.
Superman (1978). I was four, and fell asleep in the theater.
I netflixed the pilot episode of Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, Aaron Sorken's new show, earlier this week. It is so fab.
Do you have any tattoos? If not, if you were going to get inked, what would you get?
I thought about doing this a couple years ago. The idea was that it would be a single, finely drawn line that wrapped my bicep twenty times, without ever crossing itself, with each loop mere millimeters in distance from the previous loop.
I turn 32 next week. Am I too old for tattoos?
i'm exhausted. i just spent two days preparing a portfolio presentation. who knew that two years of my life could fit into 44 slides and 7 demos? i haven't shown work in a while, and lost time in silly tasks—like, making legibility studies of projected text, and comparing powerpoint and adobe reader. i did manage to divert my attention for a few moments yesterday; i swung by the frog seattle office. it was saturday, the building was closed to the public, and i managed only to sneak a few peeks into their first floor neighbors. kudos to the guy who does their windows. i'm not a very good stalker. perhaps i should move back to ny and stalk tim gunn.
update
i've just learned that frog seattle isn't open yet. they've signed office space, but have yet to assemble a team.
